Solar Garden Developer Clean Energy Collective Takes “Sunny” Award
Community solar model recognized for making state’s greatest contribution to solar advancement.
Boulder, Colo. (February 8, 2013) Community-owned solar garden developer Clean Energy Collective (CEC) announced today that it has received the Sunny award from the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (COSEIA), presented at this week’s Solar Power Colorado conference. Initiated in 1989, the Sunny is awarded each year to the company that made the greatest contribution to solar advancement in the state. CEC was chosen for its positive impact on renewable energy adoption through its community-owned solar garden model.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from COSEIA,” said CEC founder and president Paul Spencer. “Colorado utilities and consumers have embraced our community-owned, utility-scale model, and we couldn’t be more excited to be playing a leading role in moving the needle on solar adoption.”
In 2010, CEC established the first community-owned solar garden in the country near El Jebel, Colorado. Since that time, CEC has installed 2.7 MW of community solar in Colorado, and projects to complete the construction 4.5 MW in the state by year’s end.
CEC also has projects in New Mexico, Minnesota and Vermont. In all, CEC has partnered with eight utilities and has 15 shared solar projects operating or under development, representing more than 5.3 MW of community-sited solar PV. By the end of 2013, CEC estimates their community-owned arrays will be providing upwards of 10 MW of energy capacity, with that number eclipsing 100 MW nationally by 2015.
In addition to the Sunny, CEC has been recognized with several awards, including the Solar Energy Industries Association 2012 Photovoltaic Project of Distinction Award, the 2012 Colorado Companies to Watch, the Department of Energy’s 2011 “Innovative Green Power Program of the Year” award, and Climate Change Business Journal’s “2011 Business Achievement Award.”
