LEADVILLE, COLO. (May 18, 2015) – Colorado-based Clean Energy Collective (CEC), the nation’s leading community solar developer, announced that Moose Haven Condominium Community, a 47-unit complex in Leadville, Colo., has purchased 33.2 kW of solar power in the 500kW Lake County Community Solar Array. Community solar enables condominiums and other multi-unit housing in Colorado to address cost-reduction and sustainability initiatives by adopting CEC’s roofless solution. The result – 50% of Moose Haven’s energy needs of all units will be offset by locally generated clean power.
“We have a forward-looking homeowners association, so we were looking for opportunities that fit well with our efforts to be more efficient and more green,” said Jim Hidy, board president. “What made CEC’s roofless model so attractive for us was its flexibility. We didn’t have to put a system on site, and we could buy in at a level that worked for our budget. Also, as a non-profit HOA we otherwise wouldn’t have had access to the federal tax credit which is worked in to the price as a discount. The money saved by going solar will be realized by every resident.”
CEC’s community solar model employs economies of scale to build optimally sited, fully maintained solar PV arrays designed for maximum power production and lifespan, delivering the lowest possible price for renewable energy. The shared arrays are accessible to all ratepayers in the participating utility territory—residential, commercial, and municipal—with credit for energy production delivered directly on customers’ utility bills.
Moose Haven’s 33.2 kW system, a total of 109 solar panels, will produce about 55,250 kilowatt hours of energy each year. The HOA expects to realize a 6% payback in the first year, and more than $61,000 in savings over the first 20 years. The environmental benefit of the purchase, over the first 20 years, equates to a reduction of more than 1.8 million pounds of CO2 emissions, or the CO2 absorption power of 2,800 trees.
The Lake County Community Solar Array is CEC’s 10th facility under Xcel Energy’s Solar Rewards Communities program, and the 18th shared solar facility in Colorado. More than 75% of Colorado electricity ratepayers now have access to community solar.
